On my blog, I write about ways we can make our design industry more inclusive by removing barriers, breaking down systems, and putting human needs at the center of our stories and solutions.

Design Principles

An ever evolving list of principles and practices that guide my work

  • Design is a process that helps us solve problems. Our work should center the change we wish to make rather the “thing” that comes out of it.

  • As designers, we are responsible for both the intended and unintended consequences of our work. We must look beyond our good intentions and explore how our work truly affect everyone. Design can solve problems. But it can also create them.

  • All good design is accessible and inclusive. We should make it our priority and foundation to design for solutions that work for everyone.

  • Design is about making the complex simple. Simplifying strategies and processes helps you move more quickly. On the other hand, we must recognize the complexity of human stories. It’s the layers that bring out human needs.

  • Design is about solving problems for other people. And to do that, we must learn how to let go of our own biases and preconceptions. When we know ourselves, we can be more present, and in turn, listen to and understand other peoples needs better.

  • The people closest to the problem are most equipped to come up with sustainable solutions.

  • No matter the topic, play and joy is central to creativity — and to life.

  • Approach work with the aim to learn. Curiosity helps us gain new perspectives and connect dots that help us discover new solutions.

  • Design is about sharing what you know openly. Through giving we also gain.

  • Practice clear communication and lean into difficult conversation. Practice clear communication both internally and externally.

Let’s collaborate

I love working with nonprofits and socially-minded companies/organizations who are looking to use design and storytelling to launch new products and tell better stories.. Is that you?
